AN ODE TO THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT IN INDIA: Exclusive Interview with Felix Bendish

September 30, 2024

In an astounding display of creativity and empowerment, Mumbai-based designer Felix Bendish unveiled his latest collection, “Fierce Momentum,” at the prestigious De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms during London Fashion Week SS24. Drawing inspiration from the untamed spirit of women and the unyielding nature of crocodiles, Bendish’s collection made a bold statement on Saturday night.

When asked about the inspiration behind his walk, Bendish enthusiastically told me, “The collection is called Fierce Momentum. I believe that today women are fierce and they do not need a man to justify or dictate them. The collection is inspired by the crocodile – the crocodile is so fierce, just like women.” His eyes sparkled with determination as he continued, “The whole collection has elements of digital printing, embroidery, and the motif of the crocodile texture. That is how we started the journey. There is no leather, so we are trying to play around with sustainable fashion.”

The idea to incorporate crocodile imagery into his collection seemed to flow naturally for Bendish. “It just comes,” he explained, his voice filled with the same spontaneity that seemed to characterise his creative process.

Bendish, who spent two and a half months meticulously crafting his collection, emphasised the importance of staying attuned to trends while adding his unique touch. “I follow a trend for inspiration but put my own take on it,” he shared, revealing the delicate balance between contemporary fashion and individual creativity that defines his work.

One of Bendish’s favourite designs from the collection epitomised the essence of fierceness. “The fierce one,” he declared with pride, “It has spikes and green. It is so powerful with the spike accessories.”

In a nod to sustainability, Bendish revealed his conscientious approach to sourcing materials. “India is very known for its textiles,” he remarked, explaining that all the fabrics, including cotton and twill, were sourced from his home country. “We buy a lot of fabrics and I recycle a lot of my old fabrics. Leftover pieces of cotton go into digital printing, so we do not waste anything. Leftover sequins are used too,” he added, highlighting his commitment to minimising waste in the fashion industry.

As for what lies ahead, Bendish shared his next venture. “I am now heading for India Fashion Week,” he revealed, eyes sparkling with anticipation for the next chapter in his creative journey. When asked if he would return to showcase in London, he expressed his admiration for the city’s unique fashion scene, stating, “London is known for its high street fashion. It is so unique. Everyone comes to London to showcase their creativity and to celebrate fashion.”

Felix Bendish’s “Fierce Momentum” collection not only showcased his talent but also embodied the strength and determination of women, encapsulating the essence of empowerment and individuality in the world of fashion. As he continues to make waves on runways around the world, Bendish’s unique vision promises to leave an indelible mark on the industry, one fierce design at a time.
